Wings Over Houston Airshow – 2016

This past Sunday, I spent the afternoon with my daughter at the Wings Over Houston Airshow. This was my third time to attend. The first was when I was 7 or so, the second last year (2015). Last year I enjoyed myself quite a bit. I brought my camera for the first time to attempt to get some interesting shots of the USAF Thunderbirds. I was pleasantly surprised with what I was able to capture with my 50mm and my 135mm. Neither of them were really designed for airborne photography, but I was able to walk away with some amazing photos, nonetheless.

This year I decided to try to get my hands on a longer focal length lens. Being (primarily) a wedding/portrait/commercial photographer, I don’t really have the lenses I wanted for the airshow. Sony was going to send me their 500mm f/4 on loan, but it became unavailable due to Photo Plus in NYC being the same weekend. Boo.

However, two good friends loaned me their Sony G 70-400 (a mount) and Sony 70-200 (e mount) to try out. The 70-400 was my friend, all afternoon. I was so impressed with how well it grabbed focus and its ability to keep up with my Sony a7rii’s object tracking.

The Navy’s Blue Angels were the headliners for this year’s show and they didn’t disappoint. Here are some of my favorite shots from the day.

Though the Blue Angels were the main attraction, I loved some of the images I was able to get of an Air Force F-16 and the Aeroshell performance. Their performances were equally amazing!

I would love to know what you think! This is not my area of expertise, but I think they turned out pretty nice.
